2013 was a pivotal year for Selwyn Birchwood, a young and talented guitarist and singer from Florida who won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis at the very beginning of the year and also received the Albert King Guitarist Of The Year Award, just what was needed to get noticed by Bruce Iglauer, the founder of the prestigious Alligator Records, who then offered him a contract...

Trained in the school of guitarists such as Freddie King, Albert Collins, Lightnin' Hopkins and Buddy Guy, the young Selwyn refined his learning of the instrument with Sonny Rhodes, the Texan blues legend who took him under his wing and taught him the last details he was still missing, allowing him to reach the impressive level he displays today on his first album for Alligator (released in April 2014) "Don't Call No Ambulance", an anthology of twelve pieces where the energy blends naturally with the depth of the voice and where the Lap steel parts contrast with precise riffs.

Propelled to the heights of his art, Selwyn Birchwood is now multiplying his concerts, opening for his role models, from Joe Louis Walker to Buddy Guy to Robert Cray, and adding fuel to his fire with particularly well-felt songs played with both soul and heart.

All this recent news suggests that in the very near future, Selwyn Birchwood will see his name written alongside those of his role models on the posters of the world's biggest festivals! Add to all that a fresh tone and a real dose of charisma, and you have an artist you must experience live, of course, who lacks nothing and who is arriving in Europe for the first time in 2015!

We bet the culture pages of the Washington Post were right in dedicating a profile to him, presenting him as one of the next generation of blues artists!
